DRS Airborne & Intelligence Systems, Fort Walton Beach, FLprovides engineering, manufacturing, and support of defense and aerospace systems for sea, land, air, and space use. Our product and service areas include electronic control and monitoring systems, aerospace material handling systems, simulation and training systems, aerospace support equipment, contract manufacturing, engineering, and product support. Title: Optical Technician

Position Summary:

Provide technical support to engineers and scientist on moderately complex components, devices, material, products, processes and/or equipment.(2 positions open)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support to engineers and scientist on moderately complex components, devices, material, products, processes and/or equipment

  • Responsible for testing, modifying, reworking, and repairing electronic, optical and mechanical assemblies

  • Work from moderately complex wiring and assembly drawings, operation sheets, engineering specifications and sketches

  • Design and test prototype assemblies and production units

  • Use judgment in re-working or re-wiring to bring unit within quality control specifications

  • Testing, inspection, and repairing of electronic, optical or mechanical assemblies

  • Work under minimal supervision and may provide guidance to other technicians

  • Capable of performing related manufacturing processes

  • Interpret and follow written documents such as SOPs and safety rules

  • Ensure compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements applicable to the company in accordance with State and Federal regulations and any applicable certification required to maintain the certification

  • May assist in training new team members

  • Interface with other departments to assure efficient flow of information and materials

  • Perform Key Performance Indicators:

o Meet production deadlines

o Quality of finished product (Pass/fail rates)

o Raw material stock levels

o Compliance outcomes

  • Position requires the ability to coordinate several activities at the same time, and to reprioritize in response to changing operational conditions

  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires an associate’s degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience in the field or in a related area

  • Minimum of 2+ years’ experience as an optical technician

  • Understand a complex system with a laser path containing optics, mirrors, and beam splitters

  • Experience with energy detectors, beam analyzers, oscilloscopes and autocollimators

  • Should understand fundamental optics principles and be capable of inspecting for surface quality defects of optics

  • Experience with electronic sensors in the Ax/EI and Roll detectors

  • IR laser and beam polarization

  • Optics and optical coating

  • Familiarity with Theodolites, Collimators, Shear Plates, Beam Power Measurement, Optical Flats, Nitrogen Purging

  • Good verbal and written communications are necessary skills for the position.

  • Experience handling small delicate components, using ESD practices

  • Soldering and wire-bonding experience a plus

  • Must be experienced in the safe handling of chemicals

  • Experience using various computer applications, including Access, Excel, and Labview

  • Ms Office proficiency in Excel

  • Experience with MRP a plus

  • Must have good mechanical skills

Additional Desirable Qualifications Skills and Knowledge:

  • Optical Coatings experience

  • Soldering Certification
