Job Summary:

The Weight Handling Equipment Technician may be required to plan, estimate, schedule and accomplish repair alterations, installations, and maintenance on all categories a of WHE, such as floating, mobile, crawler, bridge, gantry, monorail, fixed, and jib cranes.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conducts load/operational tests and various types of proof tests on all categories of WHE, related transportation equipment ,and various types of lifting gear.

  • Supervises inspection and test personnel that include crane inspectors, operators, riggers, mechanics, electricians and other trade personnel involved with the test evolution.

  • Inspects and surveys WHE to evaluate its condition, including identifying deficiencies and authorizing corrective action.

  • Develops and implements maintenance and inspection specifications/procedures/instructions which are used to maintain the WHE and evaluate their performance and operating characteristics.

  • Reviews all alterations and modifications to WHE.

  • Determines proper test configurations and test loads for crane load testing.

  • Inspects, tests, and troubleshoots WHE.

  • Interprets and explains WHE load charts, schematics, and original equipment manufacturer manuals.

  • Inspects and surveys WHE to evaluate its condition, including identifying deficiencies and authorizing corrective action.

  • Plans and estimates material and labor charges to repair, test, and certify equipment.

  • Reviews all findings in a Shop Repair Order or other forms of work generating documents, designating responsible work centers, detailing repair, and maintenance repair procedures, manpower requirements, and necessary support equipment to accomplish the repairs.

  • Prepares and submits cost estimate reports.

  • Recommends changes to existing procedures to improve operational efficiency and to reflect requirements of NAVFAC P-307.

  • Performs other duties as requested.

Education & Experience:

  • Must have High School diploma or GED.

  • Must have five (5) years' relevant experience.

Licenses & Certifications:

Florida Heavy Duty Driver’s License is required.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Must possess extensive knowledge of the mechanical, hydraulic, structural, and pneumatic systems of the Weight Handling Equipment (WHE).

  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of the operating characteristics of all WHE component systems, such as engines, gear boxes, drivelines, differentials, hoisting mechanisms, pumps, wire ropes, center collectors, friction clutches and brakes, all load bearing or controlling components, and all safety devices such as anti-two block and load indicators.
